In todays' business processes optimizing business excellence, is purchasing management  handled in all departments including IT department.  IT managers have to manage this area as well as other managers, who are in one way or another connected with purchasing processes. 

One of the newest Gartner surveys shows, that companies and much more willing to invest into innovative, flexible solutions, than into generic, standardized ones, which are mostly offered by external IT suppliers. Besides this »trends point at a strong focus to individuals, environment and alternative ways of purchasing and IT sales and techologies«. Therefore it is obvious that on the basis of survey about the priorities in 2008 is on the third place generating new products and services, which was last year only on the 10th place in priorities.

CIO's must replace the »generic IT« with specific, adaptable solutions, which will give their company a competitive advantage. 

A lot of changes and a different culture is needed when leading IT department and managing IT suppliers for different depatment in a company. Specially if we think of the fact, that solutions developed by internal IT departments are often now offered to other business units and this way they are becoming the supplier.  In most cases though CIO still has the role of a buyer for external solution providers available locally.  Thinking that the offer is limited in this market, has basicaly dissapeared with joining EU.  Therefore all domestic companies have an opportunity to choose any supplier, as the market has been globilized!
