Information Technology in its half-century history went through different phases: from revolutionary new technology to application focus, then to solutions, services and results, landing now a days in area of business enabler, contributor and innovator. Thus it is clear that neither technology, nor internal IS organization or IT related processes are in focus any more, but more and more the impact that IT has on business itself. The presentation brings prevailing theoretical opinions and dilemmas on this strategically important relationship, as well as practical experiences of author from different industries and cultural environments. Such issues as mutual perception of business and IS on each other, strengths and weaknesses of each “side” (real ones and stereotypes), communication and cooperation obstacles, position in the company (e.g. under CEO, CS or CFO), considering IT as pure “cost center” or “value enabler” etc. are problematized and discussed. Finally, author brings the set of recommendations how to improve this relationship aimed solely for company benefit.
